Continuing our A-Level and IB Subject Guide Series, this week we take an in-depth look at IB Sports, Exercise and Health Science – an exciting and applied science subject that combines elements of biology, chemistry, physics, and psychology to understand how the human body functions during exercise, training, and sport.
Whether you’re an aspiring athlete, a future physiotherapist, or simply passionate about health and performance, this course provides both the scientific foundation and practical application to explore sport from a professional perspective.
Available at both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL), Sports Science is a fantastic choice for students who want to connect classroom science directly to the real world.
IB Sports Science focuses on the scientific principles behind sport and exercise performance. You’ll learn how muscles work, how the body responds to training, the physics of movement, and the psychology of performance.
The course has a strong practical element — students conduct experiments, collect and analyse performance data, and apply scientific concepts to real-life sporting scenarios.
✅ Anatomy – Structure and function of the musculoskeletal system.
✅ Exercise Physiology – How the body’s systems respond to exercise and training.
✅ Energy Systems – How the body produces and uses energy during activity.
✅ Movement Analysis – Biomechanics, forces, and motion in sport.
✅ Skill in Sport – Motor skills, learning, and performance psychology.
✅ Measurement and Evaluation of Performance – Testing and data analysis in sport science.
HL students study additional topics in greater depth, including nutrition, training programme design, and advanced biomechanics.
Assessment is split between external exams and an Internal Assessment (practical investigation).
📌 Paper 1 – Multiple-choice questions on core content.
📌 Paper 2 – Data-based questions, short-answer, and extended-response questions.
📌 Paper 3 (HL only) – Questions on additional HL topics and option material.
The IA is a scientific investigation where students design and carry out an experiment related to sports, exercise, or health. Examples include:
This subject is particularly suited to:
Because the course draws on multiple scientific disciplines, it pairs particularly well with:
❌ Memorising Anatomy & Physiology – Learning muscles, bones, and energy systems can be content-heavy.
❌ Biomechanics – Applying physics concepts to human movement can be challenging.
❌ Data Analysis – Interpreting results and linking them to theory is essential for the IA.
❌ Balancing Theory and Practice – Success requires excelling in both the written exams and practical investigation.
At HRB Education, we help students connect the science of sport with exam success. Our expert tutors can:
✅ Break down complex anatomy and physiology into manageable steps.
✅ Coach students through experiment design and IA writing.
✅ Provide real-life sports examples to make theory memorable.
✅ Strengthen data analysis skills for exam and coursework success.
✅ Advise on university and career pathways in sport, health, and science.
