Jude’s story

Jude was in his final year of senior school when the HRB team began tutoring him. His goal was to secure admissions to both UK and US universities. Over the course of 12 months, we meticulously prepared for this dual application process. For the UK, we focused on crafting a compelling personal statement that highlighted Jude’s strengths and seamlessly integrated his passion for his chosen course. Additionally, we identified and recommended relevant courses to improve his application.
For the US, we embarked on six months of intensive SAT preparation, which was a new challenge for Jude as he had not previously practised such standardised tests. His hard work paid off, resulting in an impressive score of 1460. Furthermore, we dedicated significant time to shaping his Common App essay, ensuring it showcased the best facets of his personality and achievements. Jude’s efforts culminated in offers from Exeter University, UCLA, and Warwick.

FAQs

How does the admission process work for private schools and colleges in the UK?

orange arrow dowm

The private school and college admissions process starts 12–24 months before your child is due to join. It begins with researching schools and completing a registration form. Most students then sit entrance tests such as the ISEB Pre-Test or core subject exams, such as English and Maths and other aptitude tests. The final step is an interview and a review of your child’s current school reports before the school decides whether to make a conditional offer.

What is the difference between general admission and selective admission?
orange arrow dowm

Selective admission is based on a student's academic merit and potential, as demonstrated through competitive entrance examinations, interviews, and aptitude in arts, music, or athletics. On the other hand, general admissions, or non-selective admissions, are based on a student’s abilities rather than on performance criteria. Selective institutions generally maintain a competitive academic environment, while general admission schools promote a more varied and inclusive learning curriculum.

What does ‘general admission’ mean?

General admission does not select students based on competitive academic performance or entrance exam scores. Instead, the application selection is based on age, space availability, and whether the child is a good fit for the school. Some schools may also prioritise siblings or earlier applicants. The non-selective/general admission model promotes a diverse and inclusive learning environment which offers equal educational opportunities for all students

When should I start preparing for my child’s admission?

You should start preparing for your child’s admission way earlier than the application date. Most families begin in Year 3 or 4 (ages 7–9), so their child has time to build strong basics for the 11+ or 13+ exams. Many schools also require you to register two or even three years in advance, usually by the autumn of year 5, for 11+ entry. Early planning benefits your child by giving them ample time for steady subject practice, practising exam techniques, and building an excellent extracurricular profile.
