School Tips
Aug 2025
Continuing our A-Level and IB Subject Guide Series, this week we take an in-depth look at IB Business Management – a dynamic and practical course that gives students the tools to understand, analyse, and improve how organisations operate in the real world. Whether you aspire to run your own company, work in corporate leadership, or simply understand the decisions that shape industries, IB Business is a hands-on subject that builds both academic knowledge and practical skills.

If you’re considering taking IB Business, this guide will help you understand the course structure, the assessment, the Internal Assessment (IA), and why it is such a valuable choice – particularly at Higher Level (HL).

What is IB Business Management?

IB Business Management explores how organisations function and succeed in an ever-changing world. Students learn to analyse problems, evaluate strategies, and make decisions using real-world business data. The course integrates concepts from economics, marketing, human resources, and finance, but always with an emphasis on application to real business situations.

Core Units (SL & HL)

The IB Business course is built around five key units, studied at both SL and HL:

✅ Business Organisation and Environment – Types of organisations, stakeholder relationships, business aims and objectives, and the impact of external factors.
✅ Human Resource Management – Organisational structure, motivation, leadership styles, and managing people effectively.
✅ Finance and Accounts – Profit and loss accounts, balance sheets, investment appraisal, break-even analysis, and budgeting.
✅ Marketing – Market research, product life cycle, promotion, pricing strategies, and market segmentation.
✅ Operations Management – Production methods, quality management, lean production, and innovation.

Additional HL Content

HL students go deeper into analytical tools and quantitative techniques, with additional topics such as:
📌 More complex investment appraisal methods.
📌 Advanced human resource planning and motivation theory.
📌 Strategic marketing analysis, including international marketing.
📌 Greater emphasis on strategic decision-making and evaluation.

How is IB Business Management Assessed?

IB Business is assessed through a combination of external examinations and the Internal Assessment (IA).

External Assessment (Exams) – 75% of Final Grade (SL) / 80% of Final Grade (HL)

📌 Paper 1 – Based on a pre-released case study (SL: 35%, HL: 30%)
Students analyse a real-world business scenario released in advance of the exam. Questions range from short responses to extended essays requiring evaluation of strategies.

📌 Paper 2 – Based on unseen case studies (SL: 40%, HL: 45%)
Requires application of business theory to new scenarios. Includes structured questions and one extended essay.

📌 Paper 3 (HL Only) – 25% of HL Final Grade
A data response paper based on unseen stimulus material, requiring problem-solving and evaluation of strategic options.

Internal Assessment (IA) – 25% of Final Grade (SL) / 20% of Final Grade (HL)

The IA is a hands-on business research project:

  • SL IA: A written report (1,500–2,000 words) investigating a real issue facing a single business. Students use the business tools, techniques, and theories learned in class to recommend a course of action.
  • HL IA: Similar to SL but longer (2,000 words) and more in-depth, with greater emphasis on primary research and higher-level analytical tools.

Why the IA is Valuable:
The IA mirrors real consultancy work – you choose a real business (often local) and conduct genuine research. It develops project management skills, data analysis, and professional communication – all highly valued by universities and employers.

Why IB Business is a Great HL Subject for University Applications

HL IB Business is respected because it combines academic theory with practical application. Universities value the subject for its mix of analytical, quantitative, and communication skills.

  • Essay writing and evaluation – Develops critical thinking.
  • Numerical and analytical work – Prepares students for data-driven decision-making in economics, business, finance, and beyond.
  • Hands-on IA experience – Shows independent initiative and research skills.
  • Global business perspective – Ideal for students aiming for international careers.

HL IB Business is particularly well-regarded for degrees in:
🎓 Business and Management
🎓 Economics
🎓 Marketing and Communications
🎓 Finance and Accounting
🎓 International Relations
🎓 Law (for its analytical and evaluative elements)

The Hardest Parts of IB Business Management

❌ Applying Theory to Real Contexts – You must move beyond definitions to show real-world relevance.
❌ Time Management for the IA – Balancing the IA with other IB coursework requires organisation.
❌ Quantitative Work at HL – Advanced finance and investment appraisal can be challenging.
❌ Evaluation Skills – Top marks require balanced, well-justified conclusions, not just descriptions.
