
A letter comes home in the first weeks of term saying your child will be sitting the CAT4. There is no revision list attached, no syllabus, and usually very little explanation of what it is for.
That is deliberate, and it is the first thing worth understanding. The CAT4 is not a test of what your child has learned. It is designed to look at how they think.
This guide explains what the test measures, how to read the scores when they come back, whether preparation is possible or advisable, and what the results are actually used for.
CAT4 stands for the Cognitive Abilities Test, fourth edition. It is published by GL Assessment and is one of the most widely used standardised assessments in UK schools, taken either on paper or digitally.
Schools use it to get an objective picture of a pupil's developed ability and likely academic potential, separately from their marks. Most secondary schools run it at the start of Year 7 to benchmark a new cohort, and many test again in Year 9 or Year 10 to inform GCSE and A-Level targets.
It is deliberately curriculum-neutral. A child who has moved schools, arrived from another country, or missed a stretch of teaching is not penalised in the way they would be by a subject test.
The test is made up of four sections, each containing two shorter tests.
The profile across all four matters more than any single figure. A child strong in spatial and non-verbal reasoning but weaker in verbal reasoning has a very different learning profile from one with the reverse pattern, and good schools use that.
Results arrive as several different numbers, which is where most of the confusion starts.
The important feature of the Standard Age Score is that it is adjusted for age in months. A child born in August is compared with other August-born children, not with classmates eleven months older. Parents of summer-born children often find this reassuring, because it removes a disadvantage that raw marks carry.
There is no pass mark. Schools use CAT4 differently, and very few publish a threshold.
As a general guide, 100 is average and most pupils sit between 85 and 115. Above 115 is above average, and scores well into the 120s and beyond are uncommon. Where CAT4 forms part of an independent school's admissions process, selective schools are generally reported to look for scores comfortably above average, though this varies by school and year group and is rarely stated publicly.
A score is most useful read against the other three batteries and against what the school already knows about your child, rather than treated as a verdict.
This is the question parents ask most, and the honest answer is not what the practice-pack market suggests.
GL Assessment, who produce the test, are unambiguous. They strongly advise against any kind of practice before a CAT4 test, and do not endorse any CAT4 practice materials. Each section of the test already contains practice examples so that pupils understand the format before they begin.
The reasoning is straightforward. The test is intended to show how a child thinks, so that schools can identify who might be underachieving and who needs stretching. Coaching a child through practice papers distorts that picture, and the child who benefits least is the one whose genuine difficulty gets masked by a rehearsed score.
There is, though, a reasonable middle ground. Making sure your child has slept, has eaten, knows roughly what to expect on the day, and understands that it is not an exam they can fail will help. Anxiety and fatigue affect scores. Familiarity with question formats through the built-in examples is part of the test's own design.
If you come across sites selling CAT4 practice packs, it is worth knowing that the publisher of the test does not support them.
Understanding the purpose usually removes the anxiety attached to the number.
That last point is worth a note. CAT4 indicators are predictions, not ceilings. A pupil whose profile suggests a grade 6 is entirely capable of achieving higher, and schools that use the data well treat it as a starting point for conversation rather than a fixed expectation. Some independent schools use CAT4 as part of their entry process, either alongside or instead of their own papers. Its similarity to the ISEB Common Pre-Test is one reason it has become common in prep schools, which also use it as a data point when advising families about senior school options. Where the test is being used for admission rather than benchmarking, the advice above still holds. Schools are looking for a genuine profile.
A CAT4 score is one data point taken on one morning, and it deserves to be treated that way.
Performance can be affected by tiredness, anxiety, unfamiliarity with the format or simple time pressure, and the same child sitting the same test twice can produce different results. Verbal reasoning scores in particular need care where English is an additional language, since the battery is testing reasoning through words.
It is not an IQ test, and it does not measure effort, curiosity, resilience or how a child will respond to being taught well. Schools that use it properly read it alongside teacher judgement and classroom evidence.
Occasionally the profile tells a parent something they had half-suspected.
A marked gap between batteries, or a score noticeably out of step with how a child performs day to day, is worth a conversation with the school. An unusually low verbal reasoning score alongside strong reasoning elsewhere can sometimes point towards an unidentified difficulty with language or reading, and sits alongside the other signs of dyslexia in teens that lead schools to look more closely.
